The start of an Adventure

From Athens to London: A Cyclist’s Pre-Ride Jitters

As the plane descended over Athens, I stared out the window, my mind racing as fast as the clouds beneath me. Below lay the sprawling landscape that I’d soon traverse on two wheels, a journey I’d been planning for months. But now, staring at the vast distance from the sky, a sick feeling crept in. Had I bitten off more than I could chew? Even in the comfort of a plane, the route seemed daunting. With only a few days left before the ride begins, there’s no time to dwell on doubt. The start line at London Trafalgar Square, 7:30 AM on July 22nd 2009, is hurtling toward me like a freight train.

The Final Countdown

Between now and then, my to-do list is a mile long. There are last-minute gear checks, route planning, and a mental inventory of everything I might need for the epic journey from London to Athens. Logistics, nutrition, bike maintenance—every detail feels crucial when you’re about to embark on something this monumental.

Chasing a Dream

This ride isn’t just about the kilometers or the physical challenge. It’s about pushing boundaries, stepping out of my comfort zone, and proving to myself that I can take on the impossible. It’s also about raising awareness and funds for a cause close to my heart—giving back to those in need and making this adventure about more than just me. Mark Twain’s words ring true: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” Experiencing the world firsthand reveals the shared humanity that binds us together, breaking down the barriers of misunderstanding.

Nerves and Excitement

The mixture of nerves and excitement is hard to describe. One moment, I’m filled with adrenaline, eager to tackle the open road. The next, I’m questioning every decision that led me here. But that’s the beauty of it, isn’t it? The unknown, the challenge, the sheer audacity of dreaming big. Soon, it’ll just be me, my bike, and the open road stretching from London to Athens. For now, though, I’ll keep busy ticking off the tasks on my list, trying not to let the enormity of the adventure overwhelm me. July 22nd is almost here, and ready or not, it’s time to ride.
